OSHA Recordkeeping still a gray area?

Hi Reader!

Let's talk forklifts - did you know forklifts can weigh over 3,000 lbs? No wonder the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a whole standard dedicated to these Power Industrial Trucks, AKA “PITs”. OSHA consistently reports that forklift-related incidents cause workplace injuries and fatalities annually.

While conducting a safety audit, Principal Consultant Brandy Zadoorian discovered a seatbelt remained buckled in on a forklift. The operator opted to use the forklift without actually wearing the seatbelt. This is considered bypassing a safety feature! Read more about the takeaways on that particular safety audit in this newsletter from last year, here.

The power of these machines comes with serious risks if not used and maintained properly. Employers should prioritize proper training, equipment maintenance, and adherence to safety protocols.

Did you know pre-use inspections are required in the OSHA Standard?

CSP Workbook Answers

  1. a. Establishes the exposure time for various contaminants in an 8-hour workday.

    Explanation:

a. Is the definition of Threshold Limit Value (TLV). It was established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and is not enforceable under the Law
b. Is the definition of Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). It was established by OSHA and is enforceable by Law
c. Is the definition of Time-Weighted Average (TWA). The PEL and TLV are both established for a TWA of 8 hours
d. The PEL is the standard enforceable by OSHA

2. c. Z10

Explanation:

ANSI/ASSP Z10.0 is a detailed systems-based standard for improving occupational safety and health performance, similar to the ISO45001 standard. The Z10 standard provides a structure that a company can customize to their individual needs, helps to improve productivity, and eliminates risks that can endanger people, property and the environment.

The ANSI/ASSP Z117.1 Standard details safety requirements for confined spaces.

The ANSI/ASSP Z359 Standard details fall protection and fall restraint requirements.

The ANSI/ASSP Z244.1 Standard addresses lockout tagout and alternative methods designed to minimize the unexpected startup of hazardous energy.

The explanations above are what you get with every question in our CSP Workbook! Check it out to grow your knowledge and pass the ASP and CSP exams!
