Hi Reader!
We see you, North Carolina! Triangle Safety Consulting LLC recently made an appearance at the Charlotte Regional Safety and Health Conference, where our principal consultant, Brandy, spoke to 65+ safety professionals. She covered all things machine guarding—types of guards, safeguarding devices, real-life examples of machine hazards, and participants even practiced conducting a machine guarding assessment.
The unfortunate reality is that there are around 18,000 injuries a year from machines and 700+ deaths. 😢 So it’s no wonder this is a sought-after topic in the safety community.
What IS machine guarding?? 👀 |
Simply put, it entails barriers or devices to prevent workers from coming into contact with moving parts. We also want to avoid machinery tipping over and crushing someone, which can happen with top-heavy machinery such as drill presses.
OSHA’s machine guarding standard 1910.212 requires that machinery designed for a fixed location must be securely anchored to prevent walking or moving. Bolting machinery to the floor is easy and is cost-effective. YET, we see it all the time during OSHA Compliance audits. Below is an example of a machine that is not anchored. Can you guess how we know it's not secured? ⬇️
There are no bolts in the holes at the bottom of the machine! Next time you’re walking around, look at your machinery and see if it’s anchored. Make of list of those that are not anchored and assign the task to maintenance to knock out!
Good news—TSC conducts machine guarding assessments for clients to decrease injuries from machinery. We identify opportunities for improvement and give you recommendations on how you can fix it.
“Safety First”...no, “Safety Always” |
We’ve all heard safety professionals (and the general public) preach it before: “Safety First”... but how about “safety always!”
Out in the field, words and actions may not line up. Safety may become an afterthought, rather than being part of the culture. But eVAC Magnetics preaches “safety always” to ensure that workers return to their families. TSC was honored to conduct two OSHA 10 General Industry Outreach Classes with the eVAC Product Team members.
Next stop…OSHA 30 for eVAC Magnetics!
We are big on making our OSHA 10-hour General Industry Outreach classes enjoyable as students learn ways to identify + control hazards that will keep them safe moving forward! The feedback in a recent post-course evaluation left us smiling…
You can be next!
