❄️ Winter Safety: Cold-Weather Hazards to Watch For

While November focused on slips, trips, and falls, December adds new seasonal challenges, especially for manufacturing facilities.

Key risks to stay aware of:

  • Ice + winter precipitation: loading docks, exterior stairs, entryways, and parking lots become high-risk zones for slips and falls
  • Cold stress: improper PPE can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and reduced grip strength
  • Reduced visibility: shorter daylight hours increase risks during shift changes, forklift operations, and outdoor work
  • Fatigue: end-of-year production pushes can lead to rushing, complacency, and missed hazards

Simple steps to reduce incidents:

  • Apply ice melt early and often to outside walking surfaces
  • Increase housekeeping checks in transition areas (like entry ways where ice or snow can melt and cause slip hazards)
  • Confirm employees have proper cold-weather PPE
  • Reinforce “don’t rush” reminders during the holiday surge

Small adjustments go a long way in preventing end-of-year injuries!

📋 Year-End OSHA Readiness Checklist (Save This!)

December is the perfect time to prepare for the required January documentation and upcoming audits. Here’s what your safety team should review now:

✔️ Update your 2024 OSHA 300 Log to ensure it is correct

✔️ Verify accuracy before completing and posting your OSHA 300A

✔️ Review LOTO procedures and ensure annual audits are complete

✔️ Review and document your written safety programs for accuracy and what your site is actually doing

✔️ Ensure annual bloodborne pathogen training was completed for first aid responders

✔️ Ensure other annual training requirements, like respirator fit tests and respirator training, are completed and documented

✔️ Schedule your 2026 OSHA compliance audit with TSC

Doing these now prevents rushed corrections and potential citations in 2026!
